About the Fundraiser

Child Help foundation with the students of St. Paul's School, Rourkela, Odisha initiative.

Health and hygiene largely affects the growth and economic development of an are We got a wonderful opportunity to go to a less developed neighbourhood near Sector-20 in Rourkela, Odisha. This initiative was organized by our school, St. Paul's School in collaboration with Child Help Foundation. We were entrusted with the job of spreading awareness about health and hygiene amongst the inhabitants of that area.

The name of the slum where we worked is Nehrupalli. We reported to a primary school called ‘Koel Saraswati Vidya Mandir’ on a a daily basis where we were briefed about what we had to do by Mr. Sujit Ghose.

From the very first day, we got positive feedback from the inhabitants. We informed them about various communicable diseases, how they spread and the preventive measures that could be taken to maintain a healthy environment. Because it was a slum area, proper drainage networks were not present.

Most of the residents of the area were employees of small scale industries, worked as labourers, gupchupwalla's, vendors and other blue collar job holders. Although the houses were ‘pucca’ (cemented), they did not have good sanitation facilities and residents excreted in the open. We also spread awareness about the benefits of abstinence from drinking and smoking.

Several means of upliftment of their social status and economic stability were given by us to locals. We were immensely happy with the positive reference which we got from the local inhabitants. Soon, they narrated all of their problems which they faced in that area. We also took note of the dental patients in the area and conducted a Dental Camp. It was a free checkup camp where everyone was invited. Dr.Chandan Maity and Dr.Ashutosh Patnaik diligently looked after the patients.

We also saw that the ground water resources of the area of the area were polluted and suggested measures for safe drinking. Amongst other health issues, we got many cases of Malaria, Joint pain, Fever and even some were diagnosed with Pneumonia.

A Free Health Camp was conducted for the locals with free assistance and check up for them. A famous gynecologist of our city came and looked into the condition of nursing mothers and new born.

This initiative of our school, St.Paul's School and the Child Help Foundation greatly changed our perspective towards life. The love and affection with which we saw the authorities imparting to the children adopted by the Child Help Foundation proved to be an inspiration for all of us and work efficiently. A life changing experience, indeed! The hardships which people face and undergo and the conditions in which they spend their lives was soul stirring and brought out our true emotions for them.
