Support for Rag Pickers children education

Educational Sponsorship Programme for boys and girls coming from rag picker families and other vulnerable backgrounds. In many cases the entire family is involved in rag picking and even the youngest in the family brings a small income to the family. In such a situation, it’s very difficult for a family to educate their child when survival is at stake. To a man with an empty stomach, food is God. With small initiatives we are trying to make a change in their lives. We are helping the children with this unique sponsorship opportunity to educate at least one child in their family. We are very hopeful you people will come forward and make the change if you want them to be the change. We operate in areas like Park Circus railway squatters, Topsia canal side squatter settlements, Tangra canal side squatter settlements, Narkeldanga canal side squatter settlements.

If anybody passes through our operational areas they are likely to see the wretched conditions in which humans exist they are the marginalized inhabitants who are shunned by the civil society. They reside on the banks of the canal which is filthy and stinking to say the least. Most of them are rag pickers by profession because it does not need particular skill nor any financial investments. All the family members are engaged in rag picking, sorting and recycling.

Their children have not been spared. Only a few go beyond class four.  School dropout rates soar in the higher classes. They are inherently weak in studies because they do not get support from their family members who would see them earning some money by rag picking rather than in the classrooms. Education is not a priority for the parents it is seen as a hindrance. To change this abysmal situation we are pleading for support to bring about a lasting change in their mindset of the people who matter namely the guardians of the children. If we can provide the necessary inputs in the form of educational support followed by strong monitoring of the intervention we can bring about a lasting change in the lives of these hapless people.  We will ensure that school drop outs will be a thing of the past.
