"Ajji ka ghar" will be a home and school for daughters born to sex workers of Kamathipura, Mumbai.
Gauri Sawant is a transgender activist who makes it a point to use ‘Shri’ before her name as a sign of protest against our male dominated society. You recently saw her in the viral Vicks ad, where she narrated her story, of her fight against the patriarchy.
Now, after her transition, Gauri doesn’t want anyone else to have to go through what she did.Born as a man, Ganesh Suresh Sawant in Pune, at the age of 9, after the mother’s untimely demise, Gauri realised she was not what others thought her to be. She’d be mocked by children and adults alike, but that didn’t stop her from fiercely claiming her identity as her own.
Gauri has been working for the welfare of the daughters of commercial sex workers at Kamathipura, Mumbai. Her endeavor is to make a shelter and educational institute "Ajji Ka Ghar" for these kids outside of Kamathipura so that these girls don’t end up in the sex trade.
Celebrate #DiwaliEkRupayeWali with Radio City 91.1 FM this year and be a part of all these stories, just by donating 1 rupee. That’s all we ask. Happy Diwali!Gauri has not quoted a specific amount to us as she is of the opinion that any help would be an act of humanity. We at Radio City are committed to raise as much as possible through our campaign #DiwaliEkRupayeWali.
