Hello!

I am Mariya Danawala, an Architect turned Strategy Consultant with a strong passion towards the reformation and rehabilitation of the incarcerated, and the families of the incarcerated.

I am joined by Nikhil Khanna who is an 11th-grade student pursuing Commerce at Modern Barakhamba School. His passion for helping children of the incarcerated has drawn him towards this campaign.

The Problem:

Incarceration isn’t just a sentence served by a single individual, it’s a reality that is experienced by an entire family. The arrest of a parent can be traumatic for many children. More often than not, the individual imprisoned is the sole bread-winner for these families. This not only puts psychological strain on these children, but also affects their socio-economic well-being.

While this has been an on-going concern for decades, during this year in particular, this section of society has been hit really hard. Most of these families have lost their jobs due to COVID-19, and at present have absolutely no source of income.

The Solution:

India Vision Foundation is one of the few institutions that works towards prison reforms, rehabilitation of individuals post release and the well-being of children coming from vulnerable families. The foundation and I endeavor to provide these vulnerable children with ration support required to sustain through these difficult times.

The Impact:

This project will benefit 27 children between the age groups of 4 and 13, across Delhi NCR. The funds from this campaign will be used to provide these children with basic essentials such as Aata, Rice, Oil, Sugar, Tea leaves, Salt, Dal, Besan, Gas cylinders etc.

About India Vision Foundation:

India Vision Foundation is a voluntary non-profit, non-government organization registered as a Trust in India vide No. 4595 dated August 1, 1994. The foundation was born out of Ramon Magsaysay award (Equivalent to Asia's Nobel Peace Prize) conferred to Dr. Kiran Bedi, the first lady IPS (Indian Police Services) of India, for forging ‘positive relationships’ between people and police through creative leadership. The foundation aspires to contribute towards a crime free society by initiating reformation programs for prison inmates and re-integration opportunities to released inmates for the reduction in recidivism, it also facilitates welfare programs for their children to save them from becoming victims of their parental incarceration.

The Foundation works on a “3S Model of Reformation” in the prisons of 5 States namely Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Maharashtra. The 3S model of reformation encompasses the components: Shiksha (Education), Skills and Sanskaar (Value Education).

India Vision Foundation is touching more than 3000 lives every day through projects both inside as well as outside prison; striving hard to give renewed hope to the prison inmates and their families, especially children through positive reinforcement, education and values that help them to become responsible and conscientious citizens of the society. The foundation has successfully reached out to more than 2,50,000 beneficiaries under its Prison Reforms and Rural Development project.
