About the Fundraiser

My name is Bharat Nayak, and I come from a displaced, marginalized community in Chalkari Basti, a coal-mining village in Jharkhand, India. During my childhood, there was no motorable road. We had only a narrow, mile-long footbridge over a river, which we crossed every day to reach the nearest town.

My father started his life as a daily wage worker in the mines and retired as a foreman (Heavy Vehicle Mechanic). Growing up, I saw how communities like mine were promised development—but those promises rarely arrived. That cycle of struggle shaped how I see the world and instilled in me a deep desire to change it.

Even today, access to clean air, basic education, and healthcare remains a daily battle for people in my village. And yet, today—against all odds—I’ve been accepted into the Mid-Career Master in Public Administration (MC/MPA) program at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS)—a place where changemakers from around the world come to reimagine the future.

This is not just a personal milestone—it’s a symbol of what’s possible. But I need your support to get there.

Why I Need Your Help

The cost of attending Harvard Kennedy School for one year is approximately $117,500, which includes:

  • Tuition & Fees: $116,000
  • Visa & Flights: $1,500

I am aiming to raise ₹40 lakhs through this fundraiser. The remaining ₹60 lakhs I plan to cover through an education loan. Your support can turn this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity into a reality.

I come from a place where dreams are often crushed under poverty, where access to education, healthcare, and even clean air is a constant struggle. But it’s precisely these struggles that have fueled my commitment to bring change.

From engineering to journalism to public policy, I’ve dedicated my life to serving the most disenfranchised. I’ve seen how one person’s actions can ripple across a community. I know that being at Harvard is a rare privilege—especially for someone from a background like mine. If you choose to support me, I will be deeply grateful—and I promise to honor your support by continuing to serve humanity with even greater impact.

What Have I Done So Far?

While studying engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Silchar, Assam, I witnessed deep poverty that reminded me of my own childhood. I used to go to nearby villages and provide free education to children there.  One day, while buying 30 eggs at a grocery store, I saw a woman come in with less than a quarter of a dollar. She asked for two potatoes, one onion, and a handful of rice—all she could afford. That moment shook me. I realized how easy it is to be blind to suffering when we’re not looking closely.

I realized how invisible the stories of rural and marginalized communities were in mainstream media—even though they make up 65% of India’s population. The more the world opened up to me, the more I wanted to open it up to others.

That led me to join The Logical Indian (TLI) in 2014—a digital media platform built to tell the stories that often go unheard. As founding editor, I focused on using storytelling to spark behavioral change. Through this work, I found my purpose—not just to report the news, but to ensure the unheard were finally heard.

Our stories had real impact:

  • We helped break the taboo around menstruation by publishing personal stories of menstruators. The campaign reached over 20 million people and shifted the conversation from shame to empowerment.
  • In just five years, our Facebook community grew to over six million followers, and our website reached three million readers monthly.

Impact Highlights

  • #IndiaWantsNetNeutrality – Our campaign trended on Facebook for three days, reaching over 10 million people and helping push the Indian government to uphold net neutrality.

  • #KodaikanalWon’t – We collaborated with multiple organizations to campaign against mercury pollution by Hindustan Unilever in Kodaikanal. After a year of sustained effort, HUL agreed to offer ex-gratia payments to 591 workers and their families.

  • #EndAcidSale – This campaign exposed how easily acid could be bought and shed light on the struggles of acid attack survivors in India. It gathered over 300,000 signatures in under 15 days and received global media attention, including an interview with The New York Times.

  • In 2019, I started a fact-checking initiative. I’ve led the production of over 2,500 fact-check reports covering politics, religion, and society to combat misinformation.

  • I’ve conducted over 70 workshops on fake news, educating more than 2,000 journalists and media professionals across India. When mob lynchings were on the rise in Jharkhand, I traveled to villages and conducted free media literacy workshops for the local communities.

  • In 2022, the U.S. Department of State recognized my work through the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).

Why Harvard? Why Now?

In 2022, during my U.S. fellowship, I met scholars and policymakers who were bridging the gap between local realities and global solutions. I visited institutions like Stanford, and for the first time, I saw how my lived experience could be shaped by structured learning to drive large-scale policy change.

Harvard Kennedy School is the next step. It will help me combine grassroots experience with global frameworks to lead more effectively—and more impactfully.

My Goals:

Short-term:
Join international think tanks or public institutions for 3–5 years to gain policy experience and global perspective.

Long-term:
Establish a policy think tank focused on:

  • Combating global disinformation
  • Building climate resilience in rural and tribal communities
  • Promoting digital literacy and civic education

I want to bridge the distance between local pain and global policy making—not just in India, but everywhere it’s needed.

How You Can Help

  • Contribute any amount—every dollar brings me closer.
  • Share this with your network—amplification matters.
  • Time-sensitive: I must confirm my spot by May 16 by showing proof of funds.

This journey is not just about me—it’s about the millions I hope to represent and serve. It’s about showing that someone from a forgotten village can walk into Harvard and come out carrying the tools to build a better, fairer world.

If you believe in the power of education, empathy, and action—I ask you to walk with me.

Let’s make this possible. Together.

With gratitude,
Bharat Kumar Nayak
