About the Fundraiser

Life is fragile, we’ve all heard that. Hauntingly, it only takes less than 10 tragic seconds to make it apparent.

On 5 January, my younger brother, Nakul Thampi, 20 years of age, who was on his way back home (Trivandrum) from a road trip with friends, suffered a very traumatic and severe brain injury, including a dislocated hip, clavicle and nasal fracture, after the car he was traveling in collided with an oncoming bus near Madurai, Tamil Nadu. As Nakul was sitting in the front passenger seat of the car, unfortunately, he endured the most and hardest impact.

He was rushed to the nearest hospital (Leonard Hospital) for first aid and emergency care. From there, he was taken to Velammal Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, Madurai (more specifically, VMC Specialty Hospital) for higher medical management and has been admitted here since then. See details here.

It has been over 4 weeks since the accident and Nakul is yet to open his eyes.

The neurosurgeon, Dr Ganesh Kumar, under whose care Nakul is, has diagnosed Nakul with Diffuse Axonal Injury - Grade 3, a detrimental type of traumatic brain injury involving the tearing of the brain's long connecting nerve fibers (axons) that happens when the brain is injured as it shifts and rotates inside the bony skull. The treatment modality for such brain injury is conservative management. Further, the orthopaedic team will assess Nakul for requirement of a hip surgery once he regains consciousness.

We understand from the doctor that Nakul is slowly recovering. However, no definite timeline for Nakul’s complete recovery which involves his rehabilitation and post trauma care has been provided.

Each day has been an unkind battle and an emotional turmoil for my parents and I. Seeing my usually restless and jaunty brother being bed ridden in the ICU everyday has been the most disconcerting experience of our lives. Every day, we pray and hope that Nakul wakes up.

For those who don’t know Nakul well, Nakul is a seasoned dancer and an up-and-coming actor. He was Second Runners Up in Mazhavil Manorama’s reality television show D3 D4Dance, a finalist in D3 D4Dance Reloaded and a contestant in Asianet’s Munch Dance Dance.

Nakul’s friends and acquaintances alike would attest that he is one bundle of joy, a fiercely loyal companion, one who cares deeply, connects instantly and who perceives the best in people. He is one of the nicest, kindest and most affectionate boys I’ve known, through and through. This I say not as his elder brother.

Till now, we have spent over INR 7,00,000. This amount we arranged by exhausting Nakul’s medical insurance and having pledged our savings. In the next 15 days, Nakul requires ~ INR 12,00,000 more for further treatment.

If you feel Nakul has ever put a smile on your face, has made you happy, entertained you or made you feel loved, I request you to do your bit in his time of need. I urge you to support me in forging a war chest for Nakul’s complete recovery back to the Nakul we all know, understand and love.

After all, ‘The comeback is always greater than the setback’.

Please help me raise this amount by clicking on the donate button and sharing this page with your friends and family circles.

I am immensely grateful for your support, prayers and wishes.

Thank you.
