“The average amount of water required for our family of five is about 250 litres per day, and it was frustrating to walk up and down every day to fetch water. But there was no solution and without water, nothing was possible,” says Pravinbhai. 

Hello, I'm Akshara and I would like to take some time out of your day to bring your attention to an issue that has been persisting in our country for several years. More than 40% of our country's land experiences drought, affecting nearly 500 million people. In rural areas, people, mostly women walk almost 7-20 km a day to fetch water from their nearest drinking water source. To meet their daily needs, they are left with the only choice of carrying 10 to 20 litres and make multiple trips. Their situation worsens during summers. Moreover, walking excruciatingly long distances while carrying heavy containers filled with water takes a physical toll on their body and affects their health adversely.

Hence, to ensure easier access to potable water, Habitat for Humanity India provides 'water wheels', a low-cost and mobile solution to resolve this drudgery.

The water wheel is a 45L rolling drum which makes it easier for the individuals to fetch large volumes of water from their nearest sources without having to carry the weight over their head as the water wheel can be pushed/pulled, saving them lots of time and energy. With the introduction of water wheels in several areas, men have begun to share a load of water collection and women utilise their time to earn more income, allowing girls to focus on their academics. Therefore, the 'Water Wheel" has the potential to empower, educate and enhance the lives of several rural communities.

Hence, I, Akshara Nair, along with my classmates at Dr. Pillai. Global. Academy New Panvel in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity India aims to raise and collect funds for individuals living in drought-prone districts of Maharashtra, to provide individuals with an easier way to fetch and bring home water. With your support, together we can help ease the burden on individuals living in rural communities with the water wheel acting as a vehicle for development.
