Fundraiser Ended! This fundraiser ended on March 31, 2019
Section 377 (IPC) having been repealed on September 6, 2018, the time is now to begin the journey towards liberalisation
I started my internship with an NGO, based in the red-light district of Kolkata, India. During my oreintation, I met several people with whom the NGO was actively involved in looking after their welfare. During one of such many meetings, I met two beautiful souls, who said that they were from the Transgender Community. Without beating around the bush, I went straight to the question, "I want to know about your story. Do you mind sharing?"
At the go of this question, they started describing their lives, from the persistent problem in their community to the ongoing difficulties they face in every day life. Yes, everyone has problems and there are a plentiful social issues in this world. But, the difference here is that, there is no one to stand by them and walk with them. Society has created a taboo around their identities and it is in this manifestation of stigmatisation that they suffocate with every breath. The feeling predominating their lives is that they are always alone.
No one wants to provide jobs, a place to stay or any basic security. Hence, they end up taking solace in the lanes where dwellers of the night come and go. Strangers to these strangers, hidden from the dazzle and gleam of society.
With laws not representing them, the path we have decided to take is to sensitize people and remove this dark bubble of taboo around their identities. Hence, it is my request to join hands in providing funds to give them a platform for their basic human rights so that we can make the dream of a utopian society one bit real.
