About the Fundraiser

Hi there!

I am Sudeepta Rao,

Education I believe is a right that every person should be entitled to regardless of their economic status, it is the only way for a brighter future for our planet.

We would like to introduce you to Shalini, a bright five-year-old who is full of enthusiasm. But this was not always the case. When she joined Diya Ghar two years ago, Shalini suffered from extremely poor nutrition. She was weak and would grow tired very quickly. She was reluctant to eat meals or take vitamin supplements as she was unaccustomed to proper food or medicines. But our team persisted with Shalini. Thanks to their efforts, Shalini is now thriving. She is upbeat in class, engaged in her Montessori activities and has the boundless energy of a regular five-year-old.

There are an estimated 50,000 migrant children like Shalini in Bangalore. These children are without access to education, nutrition or medical care. Their parents work in construction sites, garbage segregation centres, as vendors at bus stations and as door-to-door knife sharpeners. Many of these families also resort to begging for a living. Some children accompany their parents to work, while others are left in their tents unattended.

But Diya Ghar has stepped in and created a solution where not only are these children kept safe within their communities but also receive proper nutrition, foundational education and medical care. Diya Ghar currently serves over 900 children spread across 18 migrant communities in Bangalore.

Support the Dreams of 100 New Children

In the coming months Diya Ghar plans to open four new centres to reach 100 new children through their Community School Programme. We are specifically looking to serve the children who live in the Mylasandra and Begur garbage dump sites of Whitefield, Bangalore.

The families in these two sites have migrated from Assam, UP, and West Bengal, and most of them work as rag pickers. As there are no anganwadis (preschools) close by, children often accompany their parents to collect and segregate waste. These children don’t receive nutritious food and are exposed to physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.

We want to make a difference in these children’s lives. Would you join us in our mission?

How Diya Ghar Works

Diya Ghar was founded in 2016 with serving five children. In the next few years, we grew to three Preschools and Day Care centres reaching 135 children. In 2020 we shifted to a community-based model and established preschool centres in the localities where the children live. Today, more than 900 children attend classes daily at our 18 Community Centres and receive education, nutrition, child care and medical care.

From our inception until June 2022, Diya Ghar has served over 2000 children

Early childhood care and education is critical to a child’s development. Migrant families are unable to send their children to Government run preschools since the schools are not close to the communities and also because parents are unable to drop their children off at 9 am and pick them up at 3 pm. Diya Ghar runs Montessori Preschools and Day Care Centres in and around communities. Our focus is nutrition, education, health care, and child care. Children have breakfast, lunch, and snacks which cover 70% of their daily nutritional needs. We teach them Math, English, and Kannada using the Montessori method. We do several activities to enhance their physical, emotional, and social development. We conduct quarterly health camps and support children who need treatment.

Diya Ghar's goal is to give each child the opportunity to experience the joy of learning. Join us in changing the lives of 100 children in the Begur and Mylasandra communities.

Your support can change a child’s life forever.
