About the Fundraiser

Overview:

Chamrajanagar district in Karnataka, India has been hit with severe drought for past few years. The drop in rainfall has impacted the ground water table and has squeezed the availability of drinking and irrigation water. Most of the farmers have been forced to reduce their crops for only one season or keep the land fallow which lead to lack of job opportunities for small farmers and landless villagers. This has resulted in major migration to various other parts of the state.

Fruit Tree Planting:

Most of the farmers in this region are having 1 to 4 acres of dry or semi irrigated land. In order to sustain themselves and arrest/minimize the migration, farmers need to diversify the current cultivation. One such intervention is to plant Fruit Trees on the farms, either a solo crop or growing few seedlings on bunds or in between the crops.

Direct Benefits:

Besides carbon sequestration, enhancing biodiversity, farm families will get the following direct benefits from 4th year onwards:

• Takes care of the family hunger and nutrition

• Gives extra income to the family

• Soil and water getting conserved due to increased tree canopy on the farm

• Minimizing the migration

 Why crowd funding:

Since the farmers belong to small and marginal farming family, they are always in scarcity of cash to buy seedlings. Apart from that, getting a quality, reliable grafted seedlings is an issue at village/ Block level. Also it is difficult for an individual farmers to get them from outside.

IDPMS made an attempt to bridge this gap. After the continuous dialogue and awareness training, IDPMS identified the interested farmers who are keen on taking care of them after planting. IDPMS sourced saplings from Horticulture department and private nurseries from Mysore which is 100 kms from Chamarajanagar. Last year, we have planted 2000 seedlings on 25 farmers’ field.

This year we have demands for about 5,000 seedlings from villages like Amachawadi, Arakalawadi, Honnalli, Bisalwadi, Haradanahalli etc.

How will you know about the status of the saplings?

IDPMS shares the details of the individual farmers who plants the fruit tree seedlings and the picture once after the year later of planting on the survival of the seedlings.

How you can help?

Your donation would enable us to source the quality fruit saplings of various types like Mango, Ssapota, Jamun, Amla etc. and supply them to farmers which would help meet the family nutrition, especially children and women. This will also give extra income to the farm families and increase the green canopy of the villages.

• 10 fruit saplings = Rs. 1000

• 50 fruit saplings = Rs. 5000

• 100 fruit saplings= Rs.10,000
