Sometimes, our farmers need us to provide them with food
What is the nature of the disaster/emergency?
The current severe drought conditions in the Latur are a result of deficient rainfalls during the last three monsoons from 2013 to 2016 and the poor management of city municipality. The recurrent deficient rainfalls has led to a situation where most of the water resources are almost exhausted and the moisture in the soil has no longer been sufficient to meet the needs of the crops grown in the area.
What is the current response capacity available?
ActionAid India has long term presence in the proposed areas of interventions and the staff and the partner organisations are well aware of the needs of the people and the way these can be responded.
ActionAid and partners have already been involved in doing the needs assessments and distributing relief such as distributing potable drinking water, running community kitchen and mobilizing local communities for the better implementation of various government schemes.
The state government has announced measures like supplying drinking water, additional subsidised food grains, employment under a rural employment guaranteed scheme etc but the implementation of these packages is very poor.
Our prime goal at this point of emergency would be to ensure their access to drinking water on regular basis along with the restoring their livelihood and employments. Women and children are our prime focus. Policy advocacy to strengthen the mechanism in swift service delivery will be taken up.
