Help us make Math learning fun for 3 million children
How can you help?
Our goal is to reach out to 3 million children in schools of Karnataka, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh over the next three years. And we need your support! INR 2500 will help us provide quality math learning to a school of about 100 children while enabling the teachers and the local community around it. Be our partner in making math experience joyful to our children.
Here's how our math programme has made math learning fun for little Raghu:
Raghu (name changed), age 9, is from a small village in Karnataka. He is the youngest child in the family of six siblings. No one from the family has ever gone to school. His parents saw no value in education and instead felt that livelihood is important. Anand and his brother helped his father in rearing sheep. In June 2014, during the enrolment drive by the Education department, Raghu's family was convinced to enrol him to the school. Though apprehensive, his parents agreed. He was admitted to grade 1 when he was 9 years old. Anand had a tough time adjusting as all of his peers were younger to him. He didn’t like school. But a committed teacher changed everything for him. She guided him with additional support and slowly integrated him into the school environment. As Raghu trusted his teacher, he gradually started learning. Very soon, he fell in love with his school.
In January 2018, Raghu participated in Akshara Foundation’s Gram Panchayat math contest. He bagged the 1st prize by scoring 20 out of 20 in the contest. His parents and teachers could not believe at his achievement. Years of effort and patience of his teacher had paid off. Learning had finally become a joyful experience for him. Raghu aims to become a police officer and he wants to stop the road accidents and all the illegal activities that take place in the society.
Akshara’s Ganitha Kalika Andolana (GKA) programme is already empowering about 20,000 teachers in about 20,000 Government schools in Karnataka, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh to help about 1 million children like Raghu fall in love with math.
It is widely believed that Math is a ‘foundational’ discipline upon which a lot of future learning in school depends. Surveys like ASER show that the learning outcomes of children are not at expected levels. Teachers have limited resources and most parents who send their children to Government schools don’t see the benefits of learning. GKA bridges this gap. Through a suite of innovations like a scientifically designed math kit that enables teacher to transact the textbook through activity based learning techniques; capacity building of teachers to strengthen the system; technology based monitoring and assessment tools; and engaging the community in the process of their child’s education, GKA provides a fun learning environment for math.
GKA works closely with the State Governments to scale up and ensures long term sustainability of the programme by building capacity of the state systems and empowering the local community so that both of them can take joint ownership of their childrens’ education.
