Help Lakshmi who is an 8-year-old blind pregnant dog

Lakshmi is an 8 year old blind pregnant dog who was run over brutally by a vehicle while she

was attempting to cross the road. She was left paralysed and in a lot of pain as the puppies

in her tummy were still premature. Unfortunately for Lakshmi, she could not see the

speeding vehicle as she was blind and this caused the horrible accident. She was rushed to

the hospital for care. Due to the impact of the accident, she was pushed into premature

labour. But due to the damage to her organs, she could not deliver the puppies. Hence, an

emergency surgery had to be done as both she and the pups were in danger. An emergency

surgery was carried out by the vets late in the night. 4 puppies were removed from her belly.

One was dead in the amniotic sack itself. 3 puppies started breathing. The following day, 2 of

them passed away, leaving only one puppy with Lakshmi. Lakshmi’s backbone was severely

injured and hip as well. Owing to this she could not produce milk properly. She also could not

walk at all. She used to pass motions and urine at the location itself. Her puppy was kept on

formula for 2 months, till she became strong enough. Her puppy was named Shelly and was

soon up for adoption. During Lakshmi’s time at the hospital, there was one more orphaned

puppy named Bappa who was also taken care of by Lakshmi.

Once the puppies were independent, Lakshmi was started on physiotherapy daily. This

continued for 3 months along with cage rest. Gradually, she began to move her legs and one

fine day she stood up. Slowly she took her first steps again and then over a couple of

months, she started to walk slowly.

However, while her legs were getting better, due to the continued passing of urine, clinically

known as incontinence, she developed a Urinary tract infection and her kidney values were

also elevated. She can only be given Renal specific dog food. She also takes supplements

and medication for her legs and kidneys. Her daughter Shelly and her foster son Bappa,

both were adopted by loving families. Lakshmi continues to live with us and is learning to

navigate her blindness and paralysis and become as independent as she possibly can.
