COVID-19 Situation in India
In March 2020, the Government of India announced a nationwide lockdown to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the country. Unfortunately, the announcement meant millions of families scrambled without access to important facilities and resources for adequate health and daily sustenance. Additionally, the current health infrastructure is exhausted due to the rapidly increasing cases, thus emerging a necessary call for action that will aid in the support of COVID-19 care activities and facilities.
As of 17th May 2021, there are 2.52 crore confirmed cases of the virus across India, with 2.79 lakh deaths. As the second wave of COVID-19 engulfs the country, there is a dire need to support initiatives striving to provide relief.
This increase in calls for immediate relief measures. Part of the problem is the lack of adequate resources, such as a significant shortage of safe spaces for individuals to isolate and quarantine, with adequate medical infrastructure such as oxygen cylinders and generators in hospitals for patients in need.
Deaths influenced by lack of resources to adequately treat patients, along with environmental factors such as the densely situated population in most areas have led to the current situation in which solutions are required.
How will Habitat for Humanity mobilize their resources and time to provide COVID-19 relief?
In partnership with local governments and on-ground partners, Habitat for Humanity is setting up Habitat Care Centres to equip underused healthcare or government buildings and create a surge capacity of:
· oxygen concentrators
· drinking water
· hygiene facilities
· beds and mattresses
· hygiene products
· sufficient PPE for healthcare workers
Habitat Care Centres will augment existing medical infrastructure and support vulnerable individuals with safe shelter to isolate or quarantine, keeping families safe and preventing transmission.
Habitat will also support vulnerable families by providing the much-needed family essentials through Hygiene and Family Essential Kits.
Habitat Care Centres
Establishing Habitat Care Centres across the country is an essential aspect of Habitat India’s mission to provide relief for those without the resources to seek relief themselves. Habitat Care Centres (HCC) is a unique Public-Private-People’s partnership facilitate to respond to the quickly rising cases in India. HCC serves as a tool to isolate people, especially those who are not able to follow physical distancing norms or are living in crowded urban slums. Empty facilities are converted into a fully equipped isolation Centre to create effective infrastructure at a fraction of the cost leveraging Habitat India’s partnerships with Governments, local administrations, and corporate supporters.
Habitat India will work with local District/Block/Village level authorities to spread awareness and will leverage its local office and implementation partners to engage with the health network of local authorities and to coordinate with CBO’s, SHG’s, and local organizations to identify community workers.
Hygiene and Family Essential Kits
Habitat for Humanity India has stepped in to provide for these vulnerable individuals through our Road to Recovery 2.0: COVID-19 Pandemic Response.
We are supporting families and individuals by providing them with Hygiene and Family Essentials Kits that will help them to keep safe and survive the lockdown. These Kits contain the following items:
Keeping in view the guidelines released by the Central Government and State Governments, we will not be organising any mass gatherings. As much as they wish to be on the ground to help, the best thing to do now is to follow the guidelines laid down by authorities and support them through all possible means.
Donations made to Habitat for Humanity India are eligible for Tax Exemption under Section 80G.
