Sponsor a Girl Child

In India, close to 53% of girls in the age group of 5 to 9 years are illiterate. More than 50% of girls fail to enroll in school; those that do are likely to drop out by the age of 12. Around 39.4% of adolescent girls in the 15-18 age group are not attending any educational institution, and a vast majority — around 65%— of them are ‘either engaged in household activities, are dependents, or, are engaged in begging’, suggests a recent report by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

Poverty is the most important factor that determines whether or not a girl can access education. The parents, who were mostly daily wage laborers such as rickshaw drivers and hawkers from the unorganized sector, they're unable to pay school fees, it can be difficult to keep up with the costs of transportation, stationery items or sanitary napkins. If families can’t afford the costs of school, they are more likely to send boys than girls. When parents have to make the decision between buying necessities like food over sanitary napkins, girls are forced to stop learning because they don’t can’t manage their periods.

 We simply want to provide these students with basic necessities to be able to continue their learning. We are starting a fundraiser to give 100 girl children a basic school & hygiene kit that will consist of:

• Stationery Kit
• School Bag
• Shoes
• Sanitary Napkins
• Hand Sanitizer
• Soap

One kit will cost us 1500 rupees. With this basic kit, these girl children have a modest chance of beginning the school year with things that their parents cannot afford to provide them.

We know that this is a droplet in the ocean of support they need but we must start somewhere. Every act counts, no matter how small, and this is why we encourage you to support us in our cause to bring education into the lives of girl children.
