Know Me!

I’m Surja, a Care Leaver, a learner, and a changemaker from India. I am a Youth Advocate and a Dreamer of a Better Tomorrow!

I spent my childhood in a care home. Life after has been uncertain and difficult, but I chose not to give up. I focussed on my education and now work to do what I love to do most: be around and support Care Leavers and children in care homes across India, who, like me, are outside the safety net of family care.

I am going to Malaysia to represent India’s Care Leavers at BICON 2025, a powerful international conference that brings together youth, experts, and policymakers to shape the future of child care in Asia.(https://bicon.asia/)

This is not just my journey, it's our voice, our story, our hope. It’s a chance to speak for the many unheard voices. It’s a step toward building a better system for every child who grows up without family care.

Why this Matters

BICON brings delegates from across the world come together to share lived experiences, influence care reform policies and collaborate for better support systems.

Since 2014, BICON has been a significant event focusing on the rights of children and young people without parental care. In the last edition, over 300 delegates worldwide gathered at the conference to discuss children’s rights and care reform challenges in Asia. We will gather again this year, stronger and more ambitious than ever. By attending, I will speak up for Indian Care Leavers and share our lived realities, showcase best practices and local solutions and learn from global experiences and bring back insights.
