Oxfam India works to address root causes of poverty and inequality. We see poverty as a problem where people are deprived of opportunities, choices, resources, knowledge and protection. Poverty is something more than mere lack of income, health and education. It is also people's frustration on being excluded from decision-making. While the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the guiding framework under which Oxfam India functions, we also derive our mandate from the Constitutional Rights promised to every citizen of the country.
Persistent poverty and inequality is not just a violation of basic human rights of the people but it also undermines economic growth of a nation by wasting talents and human resources. It leads to a skewed society where power and decision-making remains in the hands of a few, leading to greater conflicts and undermining social cohesion.
Oxfam seeks to address this through a Rights Based Approach where people are seen as the bearers of civil, political and social and economic rights. At the same time, institutions, both state and non-state, are seen as duty bearers to guarantee and provide those rights to the people. It is also important to underline that without augmenting people's ability to exercise them, the rights would be meaningless.
Organizational values and competencies define acceptable standards which govern the behaviour of individuals within the organization. They set common norms of dealing with each other while working to achieve the organizational goals and objectives. Oxfam believes that the below mentioned values are core to its vision and would seek to promote them through its work.

Floods devastate lives. People have lost their homes in Assam, as well as their agricultural produce, personal valuables and livestock, all of which they depended on for their livelihood. The full extent of their suffering is becoming visible only now. Without access to clean water and shelter, they are particularly vulnerable at this time. Hand pumps are contaminated with flood water; open defecation and debris have become matters of concern. Stagnant water too poses the risk of water-borne diseases like diarrhoea, malaria and dengue.
Oxfam’s team is tirelessly working in the worst hit districts to provide urgent assistance for flood survivors to cope. Among them is Jorhat, which has seen its biggest flood since 1998. The priority is to make available Hygiene kits, Shelter and other Non-Food items like tarpaulins, blankets, ground sheets, a specially designed Oxfam bucket that prevents contamination of water, mugs, mosquito nets and water purification tablets among other relief items.
