International Day of Families is marked on May 15 by the United Nations. It is celebrated worldwide to raise awareness about the value of families and highlights the international community’s role in their development. The day celebrates the importance of families and the values associated with them. The idea behind the day was to focus on some key topics that affect people across the globe – these include health, education, children’s rights, gender equality, balance, and social inclusion.
Family offers us a sense of security of having someone with whom we can share our troubles and celebrate our victories. It also entails treating one another with respect and taking responsibility for one’s actions. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, many families have lost their loved ones. The pandemic brought the pain and fear of losing loved ones. While people lived under the shadow of a deadly, contagious disease, it also helped everyone realize the importance of family – whether bonded by blood or otherwise.
The pandemic also resulted in a loss of jobs and economic difficulties worldwide, leading to uncertainty and frustration. This led to an increase in violence against women and children. The number of domestic violence cases has increased during the pandemic and brought the focus on the need to support vulnerable families.
History of International Day of Families:
This day was introduced in the Resolution 44/82 of December 9, 1989, by the United Nations General Assembly. In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution (A/RES/47/237). Thus, designating May 15 as the International Day of Families. The fundamental goal is to show the UN’s willingness to encourage people worldwide. This is done to improve their living standards and improve social progress.
The leaders organize tons of workshops, seminars, and exhibitions. These are collected at the local, national, and worldwide levels. Several educational initiatives are introduced during these workshops. They are organized for the public to improve and promote family bonding.
