History Of The Scheme
Navjaat Shishu Suraksha Karyakram was initiated in September 2009 under the leadership of Union Health Minister Gulam Nabi Azad, to reduce the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR). The IMR or Infant Mortality Rate in India in 2012 was 46 per 1000 in rural and 28 in urban areas, down from 66 and 38 in 2003.
The program sought to equip paramedical staff across various health centres throughout the country with the skills necessary to save both newborns and mothers. Since its inception in 2009, the Government of India has implemented NSSK to enhance the capacity of doctors and nurses in providing essential newborn care during and immediately after birth.
On November 20th, 2020, as part of the National Newborn Week celebrated from 15th – 21st November 2020, Dr Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, unveiled the revised training package for NSSK.
