A trip down memory lane

School is a place where our earliest memories start to form, opportunities present themselves and learning comes alive. Ever wondered what life would be like if you didn’t go to school? I bet you can’t even imagine it…well, neither can we!

Shree Ganesh Vidya Mandir (SGVM), the sole-standing Marathi-medium Primary school in Dharavi, is home to 150 bright Scheduled Caste and Tribe children. The government has reallocated funds, effectively shutting SGVM down. We adopted SGVM in 2013 and you can help us support it this academic year - sponsor a child’s education for just INR 8000! For this amount, you will support a child’s school fees, books, stationery, uniforms and shoes for an entire year.

Donors will receive quarterly progress reports for the school. To schedule a visit or volunteer - please email us on kshamta@nimayafoundation.org. Once the basics are covered, we will work towards further improving infrastructure, add more extra curricula and make use of modern technologies to make the learning experience as progressive as in the schools outside the area. We are working towards ensuring that students of this school receive exposure and education which gears them to excel in the mainstream and break free from their current socio-economic conditions.

                                                   Impact so far

  • Increased attendance rates from 50% in 2011 to 85% in 2013
  • Improved physical infrastructure by building toilets for girls, increasing lighting and repainted the school to make environment more vibrant as well as conducive to effective learning.
  • Launched extra-curricular programming for sports, music, dance and art.
  • Conducted a football and art summer camp for 50 children.
  • Equipped faculty with modern teaching techniques through rigorous training in order to enable a classroom experience which helps the students to grasp key concepts as well as develop interest to learn beyond the prescribed curriculum
  • Celebrated Independence Day, World Toilet Day and Christmas.
  • Installed computers to make learning process more interactive.

                                               From the heart

“Nimaya foundation is working towards getting our school’s education to the kind of education English medium schools get. They have also helped with infrastructural changes.” -Mr. Chandrakant Kadam, Secretary of the school

“I can confidently speak on behalf of all parents that our kids have changed for the better over the past year. The NGO ensures our kids get academic and extra-curricular exposure at school.” -Mrs. Laxmi Dhadke, Parent

“I have started teaching in English in a Marathi-medium school. We are glad Nimaya Foundation chose to adopt our school to help the teachers and kids. They are also working towards empowering the mothers of our children.” -Mrs. Rajashree Kadam, Teacher

Nimaya Foundation was founded in 2012 by Ayesha Thapar (Joint Managing Director of Indian City Properties Ltd.) and Samyak Chakrabarty (DDB Mudra Group’s Chief Youth Marketer and the Managing Trustee of The Thincquisitive Foundation). Nimaya was originally founded as a seed fund to enable women entrepreneurs from Dharavi to realize their business dreams. In the process of enacting this project, Nimaya has widened the ambit of its goals to nurture children from an early age, so that realizing their ambitions becomes a concrete reality that each one of them can achieve someday.
