About the Fundraiser

Hello, dear readers.

We would really appreciate if if you could read this and get any support from you.

We are Noriko and Waki, two artists each based in Kolkata and Dublin.

This project is a short film (5min) production which is based on the story of Neil Harbisson, who is one of the first cyborgs in the world.

He was born with achromatopsia = total colourblindness, and he used to see the world in grey scale. However, since 2004 he has planted an antenna permanently attached to his skull and thus he 'hears' colours. It allows him to hear the light frequencies of the spectrum including invisible colours such as infrared and ultraviolet. Since the attachment of his antenna aka "eyeborg", his life has dramatically changed.

He has founded Cyborg Foundation in response to overwhelming interests and attention from people who are also wanting to overcome disability with cybernetics and extend their senses. However, as we have seen in history of transgender, for example, social acceptance and public awareness are the biggest obstacle when doing something different. Ethic issues and social regulations are needed as well in order to avoid the abuse of technology.

So we decided to make a short film to raise awareness and stir people's imagination of what the future might look like and think for better future. We are also collaboration in this project with India Future Society.

We want people to think this issue as what we have to collectively address NOW, as technology is rapidly developing and India is one of the biggest tech market in the world. India also has the biggest proportion of young generation, so we feel a sense of urgency to think about this as its our own thing and also for young generation. We believe storytelling is the most powerful tool to let people think and imagine.

We wrote a plot to make it relatable and imaginable, as the central theme is heart break which is universal emotion we have and we address what kind of impact it has on a human when it intersects with technology, particularly,  cybernetics. This is the plot:

-In the late 2020s’ Delhi, there is a young couple.-

The boyfriend, Kenneth was born with achromatopsia, an extreme form of colour blindness that results in his seeingonlyingreyscale.

When he was 18 years old, Dr.Violeti nvented the   “eyeborg”and since then he hears colour instead of seeing colour.

Kenneth now has become 21 years old and lives with a girl he loves. His day normally consists of a lot of walking with her and listening different melodies of each place, making sound portraits of people’s faces, and painting.

Kenneth’s joyful and colourful life all suddenly changes when she leaves him. He is confused, angry, hurt, and devastated. Now every colour and note that he hears is associated with something about her and this emotional attachment to particular colours/notes overwhelms him.

One day Kenneth pays a visit to Dr. Violet’s to ask him to re-programme the eyeborg so that it won’t receive certain colours anymore. Kenneth tries to forget her and move on by eliminating some colours that make notes that remind him of her from his world.

However, as his struggle to get over her continues and he removes more and more colours from his daily life and his landscape day by day, he ends up living in a greyscale world again.

Kenneth wakes up and realises that it was all a nightmare that he saw while he was asleep on the bench. The eyeborg is still working and making notes for him, and his girl was still right next to him.
