Hi, our names are Amalaya Jashnani and Ravela Da Cruz and we teach 46 enthusiastic (and very naughty) children at a municipal school in Dharavi. Our students come from an underprivileged background but we have a strong belief in the classroom, that where we come from will not determine where we go.
When we stepped into the class a year ago, a lot of our kids could not read and do basic operations in math. Through a lot of effort, and contribution of resources, like a projector and worksheets, the kids have made tremendous progress. We want to see them grow further- there is a lot that still has to be done.
We believe that an excellent education is one that is not just academic, but gives kids exposure to the world around them, and develops strong mindsets so that one day the world is their stage.
To get enough resources to make this possible, we need your help. Here is what all your contributions will go towards:
Academics: We are planning to set up a class library with books based on the children's reading levels this year, get grammar and math workbooks for our kids to practice, worksheets, a Hindi and Marathi teacher, and stationery.
Infrastructure: Currently we do not have enough desks and benches we need and so our kids sit three on a bench. We would like to get enough desks and benches, a book shelf, and basic tech supplies like speakers for teaching whilst using the projector.
Field Trips: We believe that for our kids to grow as individuals, they need to have a strong understand of the world around them. For a lot of them, last year was the first time they left Dharavi when we took them for a football match. We would like to take them on an exposure trip once every 2 months.
Any amount of contribution will be highly valued. And we promise to keep you updated with how your contribution impacts the journey of our 46 monkeys! A huge thank you in advance!
