About the Fundraiser

WHO defines health as a “State of complete physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

However in India, mental well being is often not given the same status as physical well being. A study conducted by the National Commission on Macroeconomics and Health in 2005 reported that nearly 5% (50 million people) of India’s population suffers from common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Nearly half of those with severe mental disorders go untreated and only 1 out of 10 non-severe mental disorders are treated.

A research shows that there is only one psychiatrist for four lakh Indians. According to Dr. Mathew Varghese, professor and head of psychiatry, NIMHANS; there are only about 4,000 psychiatrists, 1,000 psychologists and 3,000 social workers for the whole of the country.

There is a great deal of stigma attached to mental disorders in the Indian society. Mentally ill patients are often given the status of “pagal” and are not subjected to the same social treatment as everyone else. In fact, a number of studies have shown that both mentally ill patients and their caregivers are subjected to a lot of disrespect and are often treated as outcasts in the society.

About the film

Rewire is a social documentary aimed at creating awareness about mental illnesses in the society. The film will show the perspective of the general public as well as an expert. It will talk about the various problems faced by psychologists in India as well as possible solutions. This film is being made with the purpose of sensitizing people and making mental illness “normal” in the Indian society.

The film will be released on my youtube channel sometime between April and May.

I am a 16 year old student, who is an aspiring filmmaker. In the past few years, I have noticed the lack of knowledge about mental disorders in our society. This year, when I stared studying psychology, I was able to get a clearer picture on the status of mental health in India. I realized how little people knew about psychology. I also became familiar with the severity of mental illness in our society. I believe that creating awareness about mental disorders and making people comfortable with the idea of a mentally ill patient in the society will result in more cases being reported and treated.

Why am I crowdfunding?

Psychology has always been a science of many mysteries. However, in India psychology is still substituted by various superstitions. Most people have misconceptions about this science. Raising awareness about mental disorders, and the fact that they can be treated will help millions of people get the help they need.

Through the funds collected, it will be possible to maximize the reach of this documentary and make a larger impact on the viewers.

How will the funds be used?

  • Equipment such as camera, lighting, mic, etc.
  • Publicity on social media channels.
  • Additional costs that may be incurred such as travel and other incidentals.
