About the Fundraiser

WeSpeakOut is the largest survivor-led movement to end Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) amongst Bohras. WeSpeakOut strives to work for equal rights for Bohra women in all spheres of life. Specifically, on FGM/C, WeSpeakOut states, “we all agree that the practice has no place in our lives and want it banned.”

Our Work

Ever since its formation in 2015 WeSpeakOut has been actively involved in campaigning among the community members about the harm caused by FGM and created awareness for its elimination. WeSpeakOut has petitioned to the Government ,Women and Child Developoment Ministry , National Commission for Women and several other government and non government bodies. WeSpeakOut has also petitioned to the United Nations Human Rights Council and highlighted the prevalence on FGM in India urging for action against the practice. WeSpeakOut along with Lawyers Collective has published a most comprehensive report on the legal status of the practice in India titled : "Female Genital Mutilation: A Guide to Eliminating the practice in India."

Need for Funds

The biggest lacunae that WeSpeakOut felt in its work was the lack of data and qualitative research indicating the effects of FGM on the bodies and minds of women and children.  To that end, WeSpeakOut has undertaken  a qualitative research study, The Clitoral Hood a Contested Site: Khafd or Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in India.

We want to raise funds;

  1. To publish this study and hold a symposium where various stakeholders can discuss the way forward for the movement
  2. To create awareness drives and campaigns about FGM/C/Khatna
  3. To continue our legal battle to eliminate FGM/C
